I was lucky enough to run this race with GREAT weather. It was a chilly morning but I truly think that helped me get that PR. The start of the race was very well organized with enough porta potties for everyone. I was able to use the facilities and still make it to my corral with plenty of time. The course is a popular route along Allen Parkway that many local races utilize. There are some "hills" but it's not too unbearable. Due to the nice weather, I was pretty speedy and the time flew by. The medal was very nice and I love their easy snack pick up after the race. I waited about ten minutes tops before getting all my goodies afterwards. I recommend this race to friends and cross my fingers for great weather!

Race Management

The year I ran the half marathon, Texas weather decided to do a 180. Race morning came and it was extremely chilly and windy. Obviously, this doesn't affect the way the race is managed at all but it did have an impact on my personal experience.

This was the first time I ran the half marathon course and they updated the course this year. The course ran through some popular parts of Galveston. There weren't any major elevation changes that I remebered. The starting area of the race was a bit packed because people were trying to find shelter from the crazy wind. Although, it wasn't too bad. The corrals were spread out enough so you were able to find your stride pretty quickly.

The course went along the seawall with plenty of aid stops along the way. Then the course turns off into some of the neighborhoods on the island. The race finishes along the back of the island as you return to the Moody Convention center. Since they changed the course this year, part of the last mile or so was run in the parking lot of the convention center. It wasn't picturesque but not awful either. This year, the medals were HUGE so it was neat to put up with the elements to receive it. They also offered a pink technical shirt for all participants.

This was my first time ever attempting the full marathon. Houston is my hometown and I absolutely had no qualms about signing up for this race. It was truly a tour of all the amazing neighborhoods in Houston. My year was a bit on the warm side but course aid was absolutely amazing. There were plenty of water stops along the course as well as First Aid stations. I started to get cramps toward the end and they were very helpful and did everything they could to keep me on course and get me to the finish. I was fully impressed with all the food and swag offered after the race. The finish was well organized and you went through and received all your goodies before getting to the runner reunion stations. I will definitely recommend this race for any first timer!
