I ran this race in 2010. It was a good time trial for a half and my first experience racing at this particular distance. The experience reminded me of a larger 10K, with the start being in a residential area and running through a very hilly part of Iroquois Park in Louisville.

The race began with the Papa John's Camaro leading the way.

The park has some hills, so prepare yourself and conserve some energy.

After the park route, the race is pretty much flat to downhill, with the finish in Papa John's Stadium. It was nice to run a victory lap and hear your name called over the loudspeaker.

Spectators can sit in the stadium seats and watch their friends or family member finish.

After the race, Papa John's pizza is provided for all finishers. There is no medal for finishing, but the long-sleeved shirt from that year is still in good shape to this day.

A Local Running Club -- The Bluegrass Runners -- have taken over this race. While I have full confidence of their ability to conduct a first-class race experience, I can only review the race from 2008.

This is another popular, well-attended race in Lexington. The course winds throughout Keeneland, a famous horse racing venue on the outskirts of Lexington Proper.

The course is flat, with a few rolling hills. Anyone who is accustomed to racing or training in Kentucky shouldn't find these small rises difficult at all. There is one small, slightly steeper hill with about half mile left in the race, and that tends to cause some lose finishing spots.

When I ran this race back in 2008, the price was pretty steep, but the swag we received was awesome! This was the first race in which I received a jacket for running, and wore that thing everywhere!

The new directors have an updated website with links to photos and a list of charities that the race fees benefit.

It looks like this race will continue its tradition in very capable hands.

This was the first race I ran when I started running back in 2001. The course really hasn't changed all that much, and to be honest, I haven't run it in the last few years.

It is an immensely popular race in Lexington, KY, drawing all levels of runners and walkers. The finishing times for the elites are truly fast, and there is no course cut-off for finishers.

The race is held in the evening, helping with the typically hot, humid Central Kentucky weather in August. Generally, runners are advised to situate themselves according to perceived ability. This is one of the reasons I have stopped running it in the past.

Now, I'm not a running snob. I'm fast, but PLENTY of people beat me in competitive races. I also respect everyone who comes out for a race -- regardless of ability or level of experience.

I'm glad that people are out there exercising, having a good time, and enjoying the camaraderie of being with other like-minded individuals. What steers me away from this race is the fact that for such a big 5K, there is really no enforcement concerning walkers. I truly expended a lot of energy in the first half mile moving around those that started too far up in the ranks, jumping up on sidewalks, and weaving in and out of walkers that were situated too close to the starting line. It just becomes too crowded without corrals or maybe even a modified wave start.

The course is really flat and runs through the streets of downtown Lexington. Don't be surprised to see your fair share of costumed runners, "jogglers" (those who run and juggle items at the same time), and all manner of participant.

This is an attractive race for the newer runner, or for those who prefer evening starts. I fondly remember my first race. The atmosphere was intoxicating with the crowd support and although those many years ago I didn't run a good time, I had a blast! I can still remember the sensation of the my legs shaking in the finishing chute, wondering if my legs were going to give out.

It is a simple lap course, and there is a sort of street carnival air with vendors and bands.

I don't know if I would call this a good PR race (although it is flat), but I'm biased -- I prefer morning races to afternoon/evening.

If I ever did this race again, I would make sure to position myself closer to the front. Perhaps if I did that, my last experience would have been better.

If you're ever in Lexington and just want to experience a good time race without worrying about your finishing time (and the fact that it will live on the internet forever), then you should definitely run this race. It's been going for many years and shows no sign of stopping.

There is also a 1 mile race and a Fastest Kid in Town Race held before the 5K.
