Overall I had an amazing experience running the Illinois Marathon. In all honestly, my "amazing" experience is partly influenced by my BQ on the course, but even without that, there is very little that I can to complain about. Reading the other reviews about the race, it seems like usually the race actually has unusually warm weather, however, we had rain wind and thunderstorms. That's spring racing in the midwest for you you. So, given the weather, the race officials were very clear from the beginning that the race could be called off at any point, and that safety of everyone involved was paramount. The race WAS in face cancelled mid race, and a police car came by announcing that the race had been cancelled. My only complaint about this was that they should have also been announcing whether runners could continue running at their own risk (or something like that), as it was very confusing what would happen if you continued to run. (I did, and apparently my time counted, but that was not clear).

However, let's back up to the beginning. The expo was not very exciting, but about what i would expect from a small race. The t-shirt is fine, but my problem with all race shirts is that they are t-shirts. I wish races would give out tank tops! Race morning was well organized: lots of parking, porta potties, and even a coffee/bagel bar for everyone (volunteers and spectators too!). I did not partake, and likely many racers did not since most people have their own go-to pre-race meal, but i thought that it was nice that it was available for spectators and volunteers.

The course was well marked. It had a lot of turns, but I think this is just what happens in a residential race. It was quite pretty through the campus and neighborhoods of champaign-urbana. There was a scenic few miles through some sort of park/preserve which I would have found very pretty, but it was almost single track making it difficult to control your pace (and hard to pass if you wanted to get by anyone). The water stations were well staffed with plenty of gatorade as well.

Finally, even though the weather was awful, there were tons of cheerful volunteers and spectators throughout the course. I wish we could have enjoyed running into the stadium and getting to take post race pictures there, but the weather forced everyone inside immediately. Overall, I would certainly recommend this marathon to someone who wants an easy first marathon or a great opportunity to BQ. It is fast, flat, and relatively well run. If you want frills (big expo, spectator lined streets) this is not the race for you. Also: the finishers blanket is pretty awesome! Especially this year because we were freezing!!

This was my second race organized by All Community Events and I was very happy with it. As I mentioned in my other review, they are generally well organized with race day packet pickup (which I appreciate since sometimes getting a packet beforehand can be hard with a busy schedule), not too expensive registration fees, and generally not too crowded. There were plenty of porta potties for pre-race use, adequate aid stations with lots of volunteers, and a fun post race party with a band, beer, and food.

The course was a pretty lincoln park/lakefront course, my only problem was that the course went under the north avenue underpass which was filled with sewer water. It would have been nice if the course could have been re-routed, but I understand this is probably difficult to do race morning.

Overall a fun, flat, inexpensive, well run spring 1/2 marathon. A great start to racing season.

I am a fan of All Community Events in general. The races are always well organized, usually have race day packet pickup, and are relatively inexpensive. I enjoyed this race because it was a nice way to get other family members involved in some holiday activity: 5K is an easy distance to coerce non-runners into running. It was a nice lakefront course that provided a great opportunity for a 5k PR! I don't recall water stops during the race, but I don't usually hydrate in such a short race. The post race food was abundant! Lots of bars and snacks. And, if anyone needed a coffee or hot chocolate there was a food truck there with hot beverages for purchase.

So, I had great expectations for the Berlin Marathon, and overall is was an amazing race: it was as flat as promised and incredibly exciting to run. I got into the race by going through a marathon tour company, so they actually took care of all the nitty gritty details of registration etc., so as far as how the race was managed, I was slightly removed from direct contact and cannot accurately judge that aspect. Otherwise, the only way to get into the marathon is through a lottery, or to be a famous runner :)

What I loved: The course is, of course, phenomenal. Getting to run all around an amazing European city was really exciting and completely different from any US race I have ever run. The course was lined with spectators from the first kilometer to the 42nd. It was even more fun to hear people cheering your name in a foreign accent! :) The race was easy to access on public transportation and there were ample porta potties all the way from the entrance to the corrals. The energy of being in a world marathon major was incredible as well.

What could be improved: The expo was a bit odd...there were not the usual samples of bars and gus and energy drinks (silly, I know, but I always look forward to trying something new at the expo). Of note, there was no race shirt included in the race fee. Although I normally do not even like race t-shirts (I'm more of a tank top kind of runner), I felt that since the race was so expensive in the first place, a shirt should be included for those who do enjoy a race tee. Finally the most important aspect of the race that I felt truly affected the overall experience of running the race was the water situation. IMHO, it was a disaster. It felt like amateur hour, and I expected a lot more from a major:

-there is no water for the first 5K, which is not that big of a deal, but if it is super hot out, it could be a problem.
-they use plastic cups which do not fold, therefore spill all over you before you can even take a sip.
-they do not clean up the cups as they get dropped, so by the time more averaged paced runners (like myself) were getting to the water stations, the ground/road was covered in the plastic which actually was a hazard for slipping and tripping.
-most of the water stations were only on one side of the road, which resulted in veering over from wherever you were to grab the cup, and then veering back out of the way to avoid the chaos.
-which brings me to the next point: the water stations were chaos. people were literally coming to a complete stop to grab a cup and standing there to drink it, without any regard for runners who were actually attempting to run through the station. I nearly ran into runners coming to a stop directly in front of me several times over the course of the race.
-additionally, the volunteers were handing out the cups from the far side of the table (runner table volunteer instead of runner, volunteer, table), which significantly slowed the process as well.
-also, there were only electrolytes available every few water stops, and even then it was a very poor ratio of water to powder resulting in really watered down, poorly tasting drinks.

So, besides the water disaster, which I really believe significantly affected the speed of the race, it was an incredibly well run and executed race.

Of note: You have to rent a timing chip, unless you own one of your own and keep in mind that the race markers are in K not miles, which may throw off your pace abit if you do not plan for it, or have a GPS watch of your own.

Besides the few drawbacks that I noted, the Berlin Marathon is an amazing race to add to your bucket list.

I had a wonderful time running the magnificent mile women's half. Overall the race was well run, the aid stations were frequent and had both water and electrolytes (which is extremely important to me). The course is also a nice change from the usual Chicago lakefront race. It was fun to actually get to run on Michigan avenue and see that view of the city. I did not rate the parking, because I did not drive, but it was easily accessible by public transportation, or taxi if you needed to get dropped off. I was slightly disappointed in the expo (which was essentially non existent) and shirt (which was a different brand than advertised). It seems like the race focuses on being "female positive" and providing a good experience for women runners of all levels. This included having female running role model, Lauren Fleshman, around for many of the weekend events; a highlight for me!
