Overall the race was very well organized and executed. It is very small (approx. 1000 marathoners) which makes it easier to do so, but even a small race can be easily derailed, and this one wasn't. They offered several packet pickup options in various locations, however they did not offer race day pickup which can be difficult for people who are traveling from other areas besides the local ones w pickups. Parking was easy, there were plenty of porta potties for the number of entrants, the course was well marked with smooth wide turns, and clearly defined water /gatorade almost every 2 miles. Its a pretty course, along Lake Michigan with some variation in the course, but not much. Also, lots of spectators through the first half but then it peters out for the second half (as does the field of runners--many more run the half marathon only) If you are looking for an inexpensive, no frills, mostly flat (and fast) course, this is a good one to try.

I love the location of the race, it a beautiful course along the marina, across the golden gate bridge and back. However, when I ran it, the race was somewhat poorly organized. The biggest drawback was that there were not nearly enough aid stations and I was completely dehydrated by the end of the race. Additionally, although you can expect any SF course to be challenging, I found the course a little demoralizing because you climb almost all the way up to the elevation of the bridge, only to drop down and climb again. But I think if you are expecting that, its not a problem. The race has two events, a spring and a fall. I ran the fall and the weather was gorgeous, but it can be anywhere from very 40s/50s-80s, so be prepared. Keep in mind, I ran this race when it was just starting, so I am sure some of the organization kinks have been worked out by now.

I have run several races in SF and this one is by far the biggest. However, it was well organized and even with a lot of people, the course opens up quickly at the embarcadero and it is easy to pass slower runners. The expo was pretty crowded and I did not really enjoy hanging out there, but it was well laid out easy to pick up your bib/shirt/etc and get out. The course is beautiful, but very hilly so don't plan on a PR, and there is sufficient water and gatorade throughout the course. I haven't run the full marathon, but I have heard the second half is not a good as the first in terms of location/scenery/cheering. I would do it again, but it is also really expensive and difficult to get into. The tiffany finisher medal/necklace makes it worth it :)
