The 2017 AT&T Raleigh City of Oaks Marathon happened to be my first crack at a marathon distance. I thought I was prepared and did my research on the course but after a few hours I noticed this was going to be a challenge.

Everything was going really well until the end of the greenway section just prior to the turnaround, the hills felt like mountains. Combine the lack of crowd support and runners on the course it began to get boring. Hitting the wall at mile 18 did not help but after making it up the final hills on my way back to the open roads things began to improve. I ultimately finished in 5 hours and 41 minutes just about 41 minutes past my goal but hey this was my first marathon on a fairly difficult course.

If you typically run flat courses and are looking for a challenge during the fall season then this race is for you! The beautiful view on the greenway is a plus but If you feed off of crowd support this might not be the race for you as the streets were fairly empty in the beginning and throughout the greenway.

Weather- Perfect weather for running in early November
Aid stations- Plenty packed with water or sports drink as well as GU gels around Mile 13 and 18.
Price- Excellent
T-shirt- Cool logo but not feeling the color
Expo- lacked vendors this year and those that were there did not seem like they had much interest in being there.
Overall- I still had a great experience and would highly recommend this race considering the cons.

This event was my first experience running a half marathon and I am thankful to have trained for 3 months in an area that matched this hilly course. If you are a beginner like myself make sure to get some hill training in as I thought I was prepared but was faced with some challenging hills around mile 5 and at the end during mile 12. Overall I tackled them and went on to an incredible finish.

Weather- Typically this time of year the weather in the Raleigh area is perfect for running a half. Start time had temperatures in the low 50's that gradually went into the 60s by the end of the race. At least we did not see any spring showers or thunderstorms.

Aid Stations- Plenty of stops packed with volunteers handing out drinks!

Entertainment- There was plenty of entertainment thanks to all of the crowds supporting the runners along with the amazing bands which included a local school marching band playing on top of a bridge as we ran under. At the finish line right next to the Raleigh Red Hat Amphitheater is a must for all future Raleigh races to take note on. This was a perfect spot for runners to relax, take a seat, and enjoy some music.

If anyone is looking for a new event to run this one is a must and I will now make it an annual stop as long as it takes place in Raleigh.

Only issued I had was the difficulty on signing up but with a phone call to the customer service department they were able to immediately resolve this issues and acknowledge they were working on fixing the problem.
