Sun Run 2016 – Quick Review

Social Media: Organized through my company, there wasn’t the need for too much social media – plus, I knew pretty much what to expect. However, @VancouverSunRun had a pretty active Twitter feed, and engaged with its audience really well!

Packet Pickup: We had a corporate team event that involved free appies, so this was quick and easy!

T-Shirt/Swag: For the first time (in my experience), the Sun Run t-shirt was not cotton, but a legitimate technical shirt in blue and black. A nice souvenir that I can use in the future!

Course: Scenic, as is to be expected in Vancouver. The first kilometre downhill is always a challenge, trying to gain some momentum without going out too strong, and dodging walkers on the way. There are a couple of challenging hills…Hornby between Beach and Pacific, Burrard Bridge, and Cambie Bridge. But I’m pretty familiar with these, so I was prepared.

Post-Race: The BC Place festival is epic. Thousands and thousands of people on the stadium floor, free samples galore (if you’re willing to line up), and gigantic letters so you can pre-arrange meeting places. I didn’t stick around too long this year, but it’s quite an experience.

Organization: Given the scale of the event, I cannot but commend the organizers for pulling this off year after year. Tremendous!

Would I run it again? Oh, you know I will! How can I not?

In previous years, the West Van Run held both the 5k and 10k on the same day. In 2016, it became a weekend event! As a West Van Run ambassador, I took advantage and did both races. The 5k was awesome - fast, mostly flat, and just right for me to achieve a 5k PB! My only complaint is that rather than cups of water they were handing out bottles at the aid station - which largely went to waste. Otherwise, it was an amazing event!

After completing the 5k on Saturday, I ventured out again on Sunday to run the 10k! On the heels of a PB, it was tougher than I expected and I struggled at the finish. Nevertheless, this race never fails to impress and I enjoyed the whole weekend!

For the third year in a row, Modo has sponsored a tremendously successful Spring Run-Off 8K! By mixing up the course - reversing the direction around Stanley Park, to be exact - the final uphill was more direct, and far less taxing than in previous years. Awesome purple shirts, and a beautiful medal topped things off.

My first ever snowshoe race! Slightly less than 5k, but with stunning vistas and some of the steepest terrain I've ever experienced. Entry includes gondola ride to Grouse Mountain (which is generally quite pricey). This year, the first 50 entrants got free socks - but I signed up too late. Unique experience for anyone visiting Vancouver in February!
