I raced this is 2013 and 2014. As one of the older ultras on the scene (around since 1982), it's impeccably managed and run. It's pretty low key (typical in the ultra scene), so there isn't much by way of swag /expo hoopla, but that's cool with me. The money is better spent on the post-race after party with free beer, free food, and free music. It's like a big family reunion barbecue up in the Kettle Moraine!
The course itself is outstanding; can't find much better trail running in the Midwest. The aid stations are well-run and well-stocked. RD Jeff Mallach has all aspects of this thing dialed.

This was my third time racing the TNF Endurance Challenge 50 Mile Championships in California. Overall, it is a well-run race in a beautiful location. The 10,000+ feet of climbing and descending make it tough, but the trails are generally quite runnable (non-technical), so it is accessible to most runners as long as you prepare for the hills.
My few complaints are (a) the pre-dawn start, and (b) slow return time for drops bags and headlamps. In particular, there is no reason for this race to start before sunrise (and this would also solve the headlamp drop and return issue!). A 7 a.m. start would make much more sense than the current 5 a.m. start.
