The Redefine

Possible Award

We’re so excited to announce a new award to add to The BibRave 100 2019 lineup, the Redefine Possible Award sponsored by AfterShokz, makers of amazing open-ear, bone conduction headphone technology. The Redefine Possible Award recognizes an individual who, like AfterShokz, is an innovator in race day safety.

After surveying running industry experts, our winner for the 2019 Redefine Possible Award is Ted Metellus, Vice President of Events and Technical Director of the TCS NYC Marathon at New York Road Runners!

Ted is a 20-year veteran in the event production industry, so he knows a thing or two about event safety. In fact, he wrote the book on it - the Marathon, Endurance & Event Safety and Security Best Practices Guide. He also made that 151-page document freely accessible on the internet so events of all types and sizes can access the information they need to produce a safe event.

That comprehensive safety document is just one of the reasons why Ted also won the 2016 Professional of the Year Award from the National Center for Spectator Sports Safety & Security. This award went to a leader in event safety for all sporting events - not just mass participation events such as road races and triathlons. Ted is clearly a leader in the field of event safety, and we are proud to present him with the Redefine Possible Award.

In 2017, Ted leaned heavily on that extensive experience when the tragic mass shooting in Las Vegas took place across from Mandalay Bay Hotel - the planned venue for the Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas pre-race concert and start line staging area. At the time, Ted was the Director of Race Course Operations for the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series and was tasked with completely redesigning the start area and course for this massive event just five weeks prior to race day. His ability to compress a year's worth of planning into just a few short weeks is a testament to Ted’s skills in planning, communication, and coordination as well as his role in developing the strong relationships necessary to execute these changes in a timely manner.
