Theresa 's thoughts:

I've run this event for quite a few years now, and it hasn't changed much at all. The course remains the same, the shirt changes slightly year to year, and the packet pick up on race day is always rather congested.

Here are the details. The course itself winds right on through the walkways of the outdoor section of the zoo. Depending on which animals are showcased determines your view. The past few years it has been through Russia's Grizzly Coast, featuring the brown bears, and the Amur leopards, the sea otters, and the wild boar. After that, you run through the southern fork of the Northern Trail before turning around at the Family Farm. Returning, you take the northern fork of the Northern trail before returning to the start area.

The course is fairly flat, with the exception of the handicap ramp near the start and finish of the race. At the start, you run down it. At the finish, you run up. Kind of a cruel joke, if you ask me, but it tests your ability to hold your pace. The total elevation is probably just 20 feet or so, but it weaves around a few times...enough to test your will.

It can also be rather stinky. I mean, there are live animals involved, after all. And if the temperature is just right, you'd better hold your nose. At the end of August, it can go either way, but more often than not, it is a steamy, sultry morning.

The crowd is rather thin, but there are some speedsters who run, and if you want to gain momentum, get to the front of the line. There are MANY walkers and children in this one. That is because with your race fees, you get free admission to the zoo that same day. This is a great perk if you are making it a family affair.

Since it is held at the zoo, parking is more than ample. No worries there. And they recently started packet pick up the night before. This has been a good thing, because for a few years the start was delayed as they couldn't hand bibs out fast enough.

There are plenty of porta potties, but a line ensues regardless. Getting there early if you are a pre-race potty goer is recommended.

The folks are friendly. The atmosphere is joyful. The post race snacks are rather abundant. (There is no expo!) And to be honest, I might remember just one water stop. If there is one, it is likely at the turnaround, but I can't be certain. I never really noticed.

For the price, this is a great run. It is short and different and fun. And if you want to go to the zoo afterwards, than it is well worth the race fee. And the tee shirt is always super cute.

I recommend it as a family friendly 5K. And since it is small, you might win an age group! If you do, you get 4 tickets to the zoo to use at a later date.
