This was my first winter trail run, so I really wasn't sure what to expect. When I arrived, parking was on-street along the road going into the trailhead area of the park. There were a few porta-potties and a heated tent for hanging out and packet pick-up. The packet consisted of only a race bib and a reusable tote bag, if desired. They also had some beverages and snacks available, and seating around the heater.
Since the race was small, I was able to leave a warmer layer in the tent during my run, without fear of it disappearing. The race started on time and was crowded at the start, since it's a single-track mountain bike trail. After the first mile, though, the pack spread out a bit; the rolling hills on the course likely had a lot to do with this. The footing was hard-pack snow, so my trail shoes were adequate for traction - some runners chose to also wear Yaktrax, but I didn't feel that was necessary; this could change based on footing on a particular day, though.
Upon finishing the race, runners were handed a leather key chain, which had the race logo stamped into it. While not a large pieces of swag, I do appreciate that it was something different; it could be used as a key chain, placed on a string or ribbon like a medal, or attached to a zipper pull.
The awards ceremony was held in the heated tent, and some snacks and beverages were available post-race.
Overall, it was a nice, smaller race. The weather and footing were great for a February race in Minnesota, and I would consider doing this race again. I have zero complaints!

This was my very first marathon and I actually had fun, which is something I never thought I'd say about a marathon! The organization was fantastic, volunteers and spectators are top-notch, and other runners are friendly. This race is a party!
The entire weekend was an enjoyable experience and the north shore of Minnesota embraces this race weekend. I love the Grandma's weekend races!
