I am so thankful that I was able to participate in this inaugural race. I am sure there are things to improve on in every race. I have to say this was one of the best race experiences I have ever raced volunteered in.
The expo was great considering this was the first. Yes a lot of races have a bigger expo, but I believe there was enough for everyone to enjoy. And it also gave us a chance to explore the local area and shops. If you didn't find what you was looking for at the expo I am sure you could have found it close by.
Parking for both the expo and race day was good. I thought there was plenty of parking available.
The course was tough. But from every post leading up to yesterday we all knew that. It was about the challenge.
The aide stations were good. I however was a tad irritated at one when they said they were out of cups so here is an orange slice. I was impressed with the # of aide stations however. The volunteers were very encouraging and helpful. There could have been more porta potty's in NL but I think maybe that there was not enough due to they were not expecting so many people to register. And I guess that would be the same of the aide stations running out of cups. The cheer zones were fantastic.
The narrow sidewalks in Coralville was sometimes difficult to navigate. There was a couple times that cars were parked on sidewalks/driveways that we had to navigate around. And then there was the walkers. (I am assuming the 5k one's) The sidewalks are to narrow to have walkers 2-3 abreast and try to get around them. I would tell them I was passing on the left but was often ignored so then I would have to go off into the grass or street.
The finish line was very congested, but I have seen worse. Everyone was trying to see their loved ones so that does make it hard. With the limited space that was at the finish line I think that made it tough for everyone. People trying to get their metals, pictures, drinks, & food. It was congested but it was workable. This coming from someone who hates crowds. No food at the finish line was a bummer though. Typically there is a variety of food choices for everyone. Even the slower runners. I realize that they were not expecting as many people to register as did, but from my understanding there was no food at the finish line. The mylar blankets were wonderful. I wouldn't want to deny anyone to get one, no matter what distance they ran. Especially in the conditions such as yesterday. Many of us got very warm, and then at finish cooled down a lot. The wind made it a bit on the chilly side for me. I again think this was an oversight due to how many people signed up.
The after party was less than to be desired. I don't typically eat hot dogs, but I was hungry. If our group had known that they were only doing hot dogs we would've chose somewhere else. I do believe that falls on the hands of the brewery not the CRandIC committee.
All in all I had fun and enjoyed myself. It was great to have a local race with so many familiar faces. I can not wait to sign up for the full next year!
