I did the full marathon two years ago and wanted to be there for my partner, who just had her knee replaced, when she did her first half. It was okay. The volunteers are great and the race is really fun. I love seeing Detroit and Windsor - and I love going over the bridge and through the tunnel. The selfie taking is a problem, but if I do it, I am at the very end of the pack. But I remember this was an issue during the marathon two years ago for people trying to keep a pace. This year, my partner was just going to make the tunnel following the last chance pacer, and we did. But when we emerged on the other side, the 9 mile aid station had nothing left. The following aid station was also out of water. By mile 11, there was, finally water, but we were appalled at the fact that we had to wait for four miles before an aid station was functional, and this slowed us down even more. The other problem is that, if you are at the end of the half, the first of the elite marathon runners are coming in. As you head toward the finish, cyclists buzz you and push you to keep right. We stayed right, but we were suddenly in danger of crashing into an injured runner who was being attended to by medical personnel with a wheelchair, and yet they were still pushing us to "keep right." The cyclists even RAN INTO a half-marathon runner ahead of us. This was a really terrible way to end the race. However, I do recommend it. It wasn't this way two years ago. It seemed better managed. And it is worth it to experience the unique opportunities to run to Canada and to also run (literally) underwater.
