I highly recommend the Carmel Marathon for Boston Qualifying or otherwise.

First stop was the Expo. It was very organized and contained multiple race registration sign ups and running product booths. Getting the bib and bag for gear check was simple as well.

The day I ran it was brisk but optimal 35 degrees at the start and warmed up throughout the race. Optimal temperature for marathon racing now that it starts at the end of March.

The course itself was mostly flat with a few elevation changes to keep it interesting. Wide open paths made running around people easy. Aid stations are frequent and numerous. No gels on the course so bring your own. The course is well marked too.

If I had to pick a difficult portion of the race it would be a section between mile 20 and 22 where most of it is uphill and on a highway not a flat asphalt trail.

At the end of the race there is a marker for one half mile left. It is also significant because it features a contest. Where whoever runs the biggest pace difference between the overall and the last half mile wins a prize. It is difficult to push yourself to run faster because there is a an uphill near the finish but the last 200 meters is all downhill. Overall, I ran a good race to get a BQ. I attribute to the course and the frequent aid stations in addition to my training. Therefore, I recommend the Carmel Marathon based on my experience.

The first few miles are relatively fast downhill and it is easy to get carried away. There is enough twists and turns and changes in scenery to make it interesting. However, the last 2 miles are a grueling uphill and then a short downhill into the finish. I ended up sprinting to the finish to make up for the slowness of the last miles but it was to be expected. Overall, I enjoyed the course and the difficulty and how fast it went by considering the length of the event.
