This was my first 5K, so I was looking to start off at a smaller level. There were about 150-200 participants, with the majority being runners. There was also a division for walkers.

The race start was slated for 8:30, but ran a few minutes late because of an opening ceremony. Overall, not a huge deal, as the horn went off at about 8:40 and we still had time to complete the course before roads re-opened to traffic. The race started near downtown Wilkes-Barre and went through a residential area along the Susquehanna River before looping back at the 1.6 mile mark.

Registration before the race started moved fast and the volunteers were efficient. The registration packet included our bib, the course map, a race t-shirt and an ALS awareness wristband. These were good souvenirs for a first-time local race.

Volunteers in traffic vests were on hand throughout the mile markers to cheer participants on and note where we were at on the course. It was a great motivator and I felt safe and comfortable with a presence throughout. An aid station was right before the turnaround and was adequately staffed with cups of water on hand. The course was also clearly marked.

The course at times felt a little lonely, but I blame that more on the fact that there were almost no spectators; this isn't the race organizers' faults. Also, cars were still coming down one of the residential streets, so you had to be alert and try to dodge them. However, the police provided adequate presence and there were no problems or incidents.

The race was chip timed, and results will be posted online at a later date.

The post-race party was great! Plenty of food and drink on hand, including donuts, bagels and fruit among the food choices. They also offered water, Gatorade and coffee. Every runner got a bottle of water as soon as they crossed the finish line.

I would do this race again if it becomes an annual event.
