4 years ago, this was my first race ever. I felt it appropriate to tackle it as a veteran so I could see how far I had come. This event was held at the Mohawk Racetrack in Guelph, Ontario. It is a flat, hot course with little to no elevation and no shade. Registration was easy online and race kit pick-up had no lineups, however, we raced at 1400hrs which was nearing the last heat out. The temperature on this day was 37 degrees before humidex and we were worried about dehydration but chose to tackle the course anyways. We timed ourselves and race bibs were provided to all racers. There were only approximately 12 obstacles along the course and most were wall climbs. There were a few water obstacles which helped with the heat and we took advantage of them at every opportunity. Parking was on site and was free-positive. Vendor village was well laid out -positive. $100.00 for entry fee -too much for what was offered in our opinion. Medal is great with the traditional Viking horns and the tee shirt is average. Con-volunteers were left in the extreme heat and near the last few heats, there was little to no water left except large hot jugs that we could dump over our heads.....ice was desperately needed for most stations and volunteers needed either hats or a shady spot to sit -very dangerous having them out exposed for such long periods of time. However, I do have to mention that the medics that were there were FANTASTIC, kind, efficient, and very professional. We had people dropping from the heat and they took control and managed the situation with ease. A big thank you to Milton General Hospital for all their support and expertise!! This event would be recommended for first-timers, especially at this location as it is a very flat, fast course, but otherwise disappointing for the $.
