1000km For Wildlife's thoughts:

This was the 37th year this event has been held and my first time on the sunny Gold Coast! This is a two day event with a 5.7km, 10km and a kids dash on the Saturday and the half and full on the Sunday. This year there were over 27,000 entrants descending on the Gold Coast (one of our most popular tourist destinations). There was just over 10,000 runners doing the half. This event is one of the flattest and fastest weaving it’s away along the water at the Gold Coast.

The expo for this event was at the Exhibition Centre for three days leading up to the main event. I went on the Friday to pick up my race pack and it was super easy, no line and really helpful volunteers. With my race bib I got a small Gold Coast Airport Marathon back which was helpful to carry my gear to the race. At the expo there were the usual running gear exhibitors for you to pick up whatever you need.

The race starts at 6am at Southport, and it was still dark when we crossed over the start line. This is an out and back event, starting at Southport running along the water, and through some residential areas to the halfway point and then returning to the race precinct.

There are lots of road closures around the event on race day, so allow a bit of extra time. I stayed at Surfers Paradise and our hotel (The Mantra) was right next to a tram stop. There were trams and buses to get everyone to the race precinct. The trams were super packed early in the morning before the half so I would suggest getting to the tram stop a little bit earlier or look at catching a bus. Either way there is lots of public transport to get you to the race precinct. Also your transport to the event and back is included in your race entry, you just need to show your bib. I;m sure my bright red face at the finish was enough!!

There are plenty of drink stations along the way with water and electrolytes. as well as plenty of bathroom stops along the way if you need them. There are so many great volunteers and people along the race route that come out to watch the runners with signs and cheer you along!! The atmosphere and support for this event is great!

When you cross the finish line there is water, electrolytes, oranges and bananas for refueling. You also get a pretty cool finishers t-shirt and medal from some more lovely volunteers. There are food and coffee stalls at the finish line catering for most food preferences.
