Melanie 's thoughts:

This is a must do if you are ever in OBX in April. Paired with the Flying Pirate Half Marathon, runners have the opportunity to run the 5K on Saturday and the half on Sunday for an additional Challenge medal. The race expo is decent size with several vendors. Each runner receives a unisex cotton tee and an awesome medal at the end.
The real treat of this race is the course! Runners get the opportunity to run around the base of the Wright Brothers Memorial before heading out along a short greenway section into a nearby neighborhood. The turn around for the 5K comes just past mile 2 so you have a short way back towards the finish line. The course is flat and fast although crowded along the greenway section. If you are going for a time, you may want to line up close to the start. There is a well stocked aid station just past halfway.

There are a lot of photographers taking some great pictures with the monument in the background. Also lots of folks dress up in pirate gear for this one! It's a fun event!! I've run it 6 years now and plan on returning again in 2016.
