Alexandra 's thoughts:

First, take into consideration that this is an Abbott World Major Marathon, therefore, you either have to qualify by time or enter via the lottery. Lastly, you can run with/for a charity or an international travel partner. I entered via the lottery (lucky me) and Germany is my home, so navigating and communicating was a breeze since I'm a native.

1. The expo: As a participant you enter the expo separated from any and all friends/family members. You will first receive your wristband, which you will have to wear to pickup your starting number (bib). If you do not wear it the day of the race you will not be allowed to enter the starting area. Period. You'll receive a clear plastic bag which you can use at the race to turn in your gear at gear check. Throughout the expo you can collect free goodies - energy bars and such. Don't expect a "swag bag" if you're used to that from running smaller races in the U.S.
2. You have to use public transport to get to the race site, or have someone drop you off. There is virtually no parking close to the start. But - the tram (rail car and underground) stops VERY close to the start - a breeze.
3. The starting blocks are there for a reason. Stay in your block so you don't become an obstacle to faster runners or vice versa.
4. There are LOTS of porta-potties throughout the starting area. But, still, arriving early pays off.
5. I've read people's complaints about the plastic water cups vs. paper. I don't get the complaints. Drink, then toss aside. Yes, you will step on some, but so what? It's not a rock, it's plastic. It will crunch and crumble under your foot. Guaranteed.
6. The course is as flas as a pancake. Run like the wind. No hills at the end, like Boston or New York.
7. Course support is excellent! Water, sweet tea, energy drink (Taxofit) and no, they don't have Gatorade. If you need it, bring it with you.
8. Physicians are on the course on bicycles. How cool is that???
9. The locals are fans of the race and the course is lined with spectators from beginning to end. They love to call out your name to cheer you on. I heart Berlin.
10. They provide plastic wraps after the race so you can keep warm if needed before getting your bag at gear check. After you leave the race site you can meet with family members and friends in the reunification area. Have them meet you at the letter markers (letter corresponds with your last name).

This race is fantastic. So go, enter the next lottery and run Berlin!
