The Jax Marine Corps Half is an annual race that has become a tradition here in Jacksonville. There is a Half Marathon and a 5K. I ran the half marathon this year (2014).

The course for the half is "famous" for going over the Main Street and Acosta Bridges. Since I'm training for the NYC Marathon, I figured the bridges would be a great way to train. I registered way in advance, since I tend to have "only me" issues when it comes to registering later for 1st Place Sports events (the site doesn't work, store doesn't take credit, etc. etc.), plus registering early saved me money.

About 2 weeks ago they announced that the course would be changing, due to construction on the MSB. I understood this (I don't want to run through a construction zone!), but I was really miffed that they told us so close to the date of the race.

But...that's really the only con I have! Here are some of the notable "features" you should consider:

-Parking: Parking is a CINCH. Since the race starts AND finishes in the same area (Metropolitan Park), there is free parking at EverBank Field. I got there really early to do a warmup, but even those who arrived closer to the start time didn't have much of a walk to the start line.

-Aid Stations: Aid stations are located about every mile or so. Water, Gatorade (hurray blue!), and gel (only at Mile 10). Since the race goes through neighborhoods, there were a few extra "volunteers" who were giving out things like ice pops, tootsie rolls, and extra water. My only complaint was after the last big "hill" (on the River Walk), there was no water stop - just the ice pop volunteers. I was really needing a drink at that point, but there was a water fountain along the way that I stopped at.

-Course: The course was pretty challenging even without the bridges! For the new route this year, we went from the stadium down to Riverside, then back through the River Walk. Tired legs running up the hill thing (If you live in Jax you know what I'm talking about) by the Main Street bridge = OW. It poured about 30 minutes before the race, so when we hit Metropolitan Park for the last .1 miles, it was a finish through the mud.

-Bathrooms: Bathrooms seemed to be fine. I saw some portapotties but I don't know if they were there because of the race or because of the stadium. I used a bathroom in Metropolitan Park that I maybe waited 3 minutes in line for. I saw a bunch of portapotties along the route, but I didn't have to stop to use them.

-Shirts and stuff: The RACE SWAG is awesome! During packet pickup you receive a long sleeve shirt made of tech material, 2 Marine stickers (one with the 13.1 for your car), a Marine Rubber Duck (so cute!), and a keychain with a little flashlight. You also have a decorative race bib with the date and race logo on it. AFTER you finish, you get a big medal and a beer glass with the race logo on it.

-Expo: There's no expo for this race, but packet pickup is really easy. Head to your chosen 1st Place Sports store in the two days before the race, OR get to the race earlier to get your stuff!

-Corrals: The Half Marathon and 5K start at the same time and split off after a little bit (maybe a mile?). Even though we all started together, I didn't notice a typical bottle neck like I usually do when there's a lot of people. It was nice to not run INTO each other. We started a few minutes late, mostly due to the delay from a random TORRENTIAL downpour 30 minutes before the race was supposed to start.

-Crowd Support: OF COURSE I have to mention the MARINES. There were Marines all throughout the course, and it was really awesome/inspiring to see them as we were running. They were also manning one of the water stops towards the end of the course, which gave me a little more energy to finish strong. After the race, you received a medal from one of the Marines.

-Post-Race: This race does what every race should do for the post race - there is not a lot of space between finishing, getting your medal, and having access to water and bananas. Some races I've run, I've had to walk for 5 minutes or so (Yes, NYC will probably be worse) to get a bottle of water. There are a LOT of booths set up, including a Marine one where you can test your strength with a chin-up challenge!

To sum up: Despite having a late course change, this race was executed nearly flawlessly. I'll definitely be back to run it again next year, and I recommend it to anyone looking for a great half marathon!

I ran the WithLove 5K this morning. It's a 5K race that benefits "WithLove," a local charity dedicated to "helping kids be kids" as they go through a battle with cancer. It's an incredible cause, and maybe an even better race!

I arrived about 25 minutes before the race and I parked about 200 feet from the start/finish line. There were only 2 porta-potties, but since there were only a little more than 100 of us, it was okay.

The course for this race was an out and back throughout World Golf Village, a beautiful area in St. Augustine. Usually I hate out and back courses because of the repetitiveness, but this was great. It felt like a different course on the way back, and there were plenty of views of the golf courses. All 5K finishers received a really cute medal, and the "swag bag" included a tshirt, koozie, and a frequent buyer card to Sippers Coffeehouse.

After the 5K, my friend and I took part in the kids' fun run. This was one of the best parts of the day, because the kids were all so fun and excited for the event.

I liked how all of the vendors were related to the charity. WithLove does a lot of toy drives for the kids at local hospitals, so they were accepting new toys. There was also a table for people to sign up for the National Bone Marrow Registry! I'll definitely be doing this race again in the future!

Race Management

This is an annual race held at Jacksonville Beach, literally ON the beach. For the 50th anniversary, race management created a medal, which they don't give out most years. The field went from 850 finishers last year to more than 2,200 this year.

Despite almost TRIPLING the number of participants, this race was really well run (sorry for the pun...and the rhyme). They didn't order enough medals for the participants, but all entrants received an email about that earlier in the week. At the finish line, you were given a "medal card" and were given the choice of redeeming it right away or waiting about 3 weeks for a new medal order to come in. This was the best solution, since it didn't prevent anyone from getting a medal (eventually).

My ONLY big complaint about this race has nothing to do with management - the parking situation at Jax Beach is a mess. I left my house 2 hours before the race start, and didn't find a place to park till 5:15.

Luckily I was there early enough to get my chip. With all the runners arriving so close to race time, they had to push off the start time by about 15 minutes. PLENTY of port-a-potties and water before the start. Water stops were at every mile and were well staffed with volunteers.

Afterwards, you receive a free taco and chips/salsa from Tijuana Flats. They were both delicious!

I would definitely recommend this race. Since next year isn't an anniversary year, the number of participants probably won't be as high as this year. Just make sure you arrive early enough to park!

This was my 2nd race with Ultimate Racing Inc. I had a lot of fun, and I would definitely recommend this race.

Positives
-Parking: The race starts and ends in the shopping center by Bartram Park. Since it was so early on a Saturday, there was a TON of free parking available. I was 30 seconds from the start/finish line. You can't ask for better than that.
-Swag: All runners got a medal and a cotton t-shirt. You received a bottle of water when you crossed the finish line. There were a bunch of sponsor tables giving out random things, like water bottles, bubbles, and rubber ducks.
-Race size: Very small, which I like. Races like this are great because runners who are typically middle of the pack (like myself) can place. This year's race was the same day as the Run for the Pies, which is the BIG 5K put on by 1st Place Sports. This race may have had a larger turnout if the two weren't scheduled for the same day.
-Course difficulty: Flat, flat, flat. It also matched perfectly as 3.1 with my Garmin, which a lot of races in town don't do (chasing a PR and ending up running 3.2 is kind of a heartbreaker)
-Support: Not so much along the course, but the DJ announcing runners as they finished was very lively.
-Race theme: SO much fun. There were a lot of awesome costumes, and people really got into it.
-Charity: This race supported Neighbor To Family, which works in the foster care system to keep siblings together. Having a family race was the perfect way to promote this cause.

Negatives
-Schedule: The start time for the 5K was listed as 8:30. I arrived at 8:15, and as I was walking to the start line, they were suddenly rushing us over for an 8:20 start. I've never had a race start earlier than it was supposed to, but I'm just glad I didn't have to literally run to the start.
-Weather: This wasn't the fault of race management, but it was extremely muggy and gross out. I prefer for summer races to start as early as possible.

Race Management

This was my 3rd year running this race. Here are the positives and negatives:

The Good
-Not every 5K gives you a medal for finishing! I love how the design is different for these medals every year.
-The course was pancake flat, which was good since it was basically a sauna with the heat.
-From what I saw, the shirts were really nice (see below - I didn't get one)
-It cost $25 to register the day of the race. Very affordable for a 5K that gives you a bunch of goodies.

The Bad
-I gave race management 2 stars because it seemed like the stars were aligned to prevent me from running this race. I tried to register online, but ran into issues. When I went to the store to register, they told me I had to pay with cash or check. Since I don't carry cash on me, I went to the grocery store to use debit. When I went back to the store…registration was closed. The morning of the race I got there about an hour before the race started, and just barely registered (where they told me I COULD use a credit card), but didn't get a shirt or a bib.
-I'm not sure why, but they changed the race location to about a mile up the road from where it is usually held. I found a lot of people wandering around the normal race location, completely lost till someone directed us up the road.
