Run-A-Munk was held on the Saturday before Michigan’s November General Election, at a time when it is usually pretty cold and wet. Do not let the weather stop you! The barns are heated and the after race food is better than anything I have ever experienced.
Parking was limited but volunteers were present to assist in the utilization of all available space. Packet pick-up was done the morning of the race in the heated barn and was well organized. There were restrooms (with running water) in both the R.E. Olds Anderson Rotary Barn, which is heated, and the visitor center. This was an extremely family friendly event as Woldumar Nature Center is also known for their educational summer camps for kids. Proceeds from the race went to support Woldumar Nature Center and its education programs.
The race began behind R.E. Olds Anderson Rotary Barn in the open grass, where runners line up based on pace. Once the race started, we traveled approximately a quarter mile to the trails, which are well-kept and perfect for running alone. The 10K is two loops through the nature trails, which go through the forest, prairie and around the pond. Do not wear new running shoes to this race as my shoes ended up extremely muddy. There was an awesome photographer that took pictures of runners at this race, which were available for purchase just a couple of days later.
There was a great deal of volunteer support and a nice amount of spectators near the barns. Once on the trail, however, the only people that came into view were those at the two water aid stations and other runners. After race snacks would be best described as after race meal!
