Rio de Janeiro Marathon is by far the most scenic and beautiful in South America. The course is one of a kind: you run most of the time side-by-side along the beautiful beaches of Rio de Janeiro.
Visiting Rio (where 2016 Olympic games took place) is already a must-do if you are looking for destinations in South America. If you like to run marathons around the world, then, it's the perfect opportunity! Thousands of runners from USA, Canada, Mexico, Argentina and many other countries come every year to Brazil to run this race.
Be prepared: Rio is hot and humid. But the aid stations do a very good job in providing cold water every 5km or so.
This was my first marathon in 2008 and this year I came back to run it again.

I ran Buenos Aires Marathon in October 2015 looking for a PR and found it!
The course is almost pancake flat, and weather really helps, the temperature was about 50 F (10 C)
If you want to race in South America for a PR or BQ, this is the marathon.
Plus: registration process is simple, no lottery, no need for huge anticipations.

On a trip to Miami on December 2014, I searched for any races available to run. And, to my surprise, I found this little 5k neighbourhood race, where I would run dressed in Santa Claus suit. I registered online, and picked up the costume on race day.
Like most small races in USA, it's all very organized, friendly atmosphere, lots of families hanging around, people running with dogs, baby strollers, etc.
Running in a Santa costume was a new experience to me, I really liked it.
And the finisher medal is really beautiful!
