I can't begin to say how much I loved trail running, and the Swampstomper race is on some of my home trails in Shelby Forest just north of Memphis, TN. This year the race definitely lived up to its name, since the Mississippi River had reached flood stages, several portions of the course actually had to be re-routed because the original course was under water. Shelby Forest and the trails are kind of a forgotten treasure of Memphis, that not many people take advantage of. As a result of low usage, the trails become overgrown during the summer. "Friends of Shelby Forest" and volunteers for the race make sure to get out there weeks and months ahead of time to clear the trail, and ensure things are well marked. Because of all the rain in December and January there were several new trees down across the trail, and with only a week to go before the race, they still hadn't been cleared. The race director worked with Forest Rangers, and other volunteers to get the tree removed, and where necessary re-route the course to make sure we were all safe, and had a great run.

The aid stations are always well stocked, and there are several volunteers at each aid station to help any runner that's coming through. Typical ultra aid-station options: M&Ms, chips, pretzels, soda, bananas, boiled potatoes in salt, gatorade, water, etc... I typically run self-supported, but it's always nice to have the options when you need to change things up a bit (after being out there for 6-8 hours!).

They give out a really nice dri fit shirt, and a refrigerator magnet for "Friends of Shelby Forest" as SWAG for the race.

If you're not used to running trails, I wouldn't recommend this as a first trail race, even if you're only doing the 25K. The "red loop" is no joke with over 500ft of climbing in the 3 mile loop.

Overall, I would recommend this race if you love trail running.
