This was the first year for the Manheim Santa 5K and must say it was probably one of the most fun runs I have done. Everything about the event was great from the cost, awards, aid stations and post-race refreshments. Instead of shirts all runners were provided a santa outfit and a hand blown glass ornament that was beautiful. Kids that were 12 and under received a santa t-shirt, hat and beard inlieu of the santa outfit. We did the race as a family. I was asked to be the grinch and ran the race with grinch mask. The course is a nice rolling course through the town of Manheim. Lots of families were out on the course which was nice.

Nearly all 600+ runners wore their Santa Costumes. It was a bit interesting at times to run in the Santa outfit but you made it work. I think everyone was in really good spirits during and after the race.

I really hope they do this race again next year.

Post-race they had a nice selection of refreshments including chocolate milk. The age group awards were pretty awesome and probably some of the nicest I have ever seen. My youngest son Marco won his age group and was given a handblown glass piece.

Race Management

I totally loved the United NYC Half Marathon put on by the New York Road Runners. The event management for this race was probably the best I have seen for a run. Everything was so well organized from pre-race emails, bib pick up, pre-race logistics, race management and post-race logistics. Volunteers and staff where very helpful and friendly.

I will try to break this review down into different segments:

Race Registration:
You have to be selected for this run through the lottery. Ironically enough, all the men who I knew who entered the lottery got in but several of the women I know did not. Not sure if this was a coincidence or not. It is important to make sure that your credit card is up to date because if you are selected, your credit card gets dinged that moment. If it is not up to date, then you are out of luck.

The race fees were a little high ($130) but I was ok with the cost. The one thing I did not like was that I kept getting emails about paying for their Half Marathon Training program. I felt that was a little tacky and just way to make some extra money.

Expo:
The expo was extremely small. I was pretty much in and out in a matter of 20 minutes. I would have thought the Expo would be a little bigger considering there was 20K runners in the event. I was ok with a small expo because I was in a rush. They had some pretty cool merchandise which I ended up paying for. I thought the prices on the merchandise was pretty reasonable.

I did like the use of 'Flight Attendant' themes at the expo. It was a nice touch.

Swag:
Shirt was ok but nothing too great. The finishers medal was pretty nice but basic. Not much else you got.

Race Morning:
Everything was very efficient from getting through security and to the start line. I took a cab up to the start area which had a taxi drop off area. You had to walk a fair amount but nothing too bad. They would only allow runners past the security check in area and had to show your race number to get in. Once through security, it was easy for bag drop off and to get to your correct corrals. Depending on the wave you started in, there was different areas for you to go. It actually made things pretty efficient and you really could not tell there was 20K in the race. There seemed to be plenty of port of potties.

The one negative that I had like many big races was that it was up to each person to go to the correct 'corral'. As usual, it was a little annoying to see people clearly in the wrong corral. Part of the reason to start in the correct corral is a safety issue. When you are assigned to corral 30, you should not be in corral 6.

Course:
What more can you say about a course that runs the first 6 miles through Central Park and then down 7th Avenue to Times Square. It was a pretty amazing experience and something everyone who runs should experience. The last 5 miles are not the most exciting along the West Side Highway with the Hudson River on your left. You get to see some additional cool things such as the Intrepid Air Carrier and you run towards the Freedom Tower. You feel like you are reeling in the Freedom Tower the entire way down the road. The last 1.5 miles has you going through a tunnel before the finish in Battery Park.

Aid Stations:
Plenty of well stocked aid stations of water and gatorade. However, you had to get your water/gatorade on your own most of the time. They did have a Gel Station around mile 7.5.

Finishing Area:
The finishing area was very efficient. You quickly receive your finishers medal and heat sheet. Since it was pretty chilly, it was nice to get quickly. As you make your way out, they also have a photo area. I was not a huge fan that the people taking the photos would only do official photos so you had to get someone to do a photo for yourself if you wanted one. You also got 'fuel' bag that had some gatorade, apple and pretzels in it. It was not that great but I did like the bag. Bag pick up was very efficient.

Once out of the finishers area, you had to walk a bit to get a cab back to your hotel or other location.

Medal:
I thought the medal was simple but cool. I really liked it.

Overall Major Highlights:
- Fast Course and ran a PR by a ton. However, be careful of the hills in Central Park. They are sneaky.
- Live finishers cam on ESPN 3. My family got to see me finish which was pretty cool.
- Live Tracking App is awesome. Very cool and shows where you are at all times.
- Well stocked aid stations
- Central Park and Times Square (these two items alone make it worth it)
- Nice finishers medal
- Very helpful staff, volunteers and police
- Lots of runners but never felt over crowded

Negatives:
- Charging for training plans
- Event shirt was a little weak (not one of my favorites)
- Cost of Photos!
- Not checking to ensure people in the correct corrals
- Too many runners not in the correct corrals who caused some issues right in the first few miles (this is an issue at any large race though)
- Some runners not understanding basic running etiquette

Final Conclusion:
I absolutely loved this race and would do it again in a New York second. The Philly Half Marathon is still my favorite race but this is a very close second. I really encourage anyone get an awesome New York running experience to look at this race.

I think I had some total mixed feelings about this race. I really wanted to like it but I am just not sure it did it for me. It was nice to do a race 2 days after Christmas and even nicer because the weather was pretty good. However, due to the warmer temperatures there was a major influx of late registrations which lead to a delay for the start of the race. It also lead to really long lines at the rest rooms. This was a bit of an issue.

I liked the fact that they gave hoodies in place of shirts. The registration fee was very reasonable.

With the number of runners in the race, it would have been good if the race was chip timed. My time didn't get impacted too much but I am sure some did that could have placed high in their age group.

I really had somewhat of a love/hate relationship with this course. I absolutely hated the first 2 miles and then really loved the next 2.5 miles and then disliked the last .5 mile. The first mile essentially did nothing but climb. I am not a big fan of a course that climbs right away. It was kind of comical though watching how fast some people went out and were walking in the first half mile once they started getting into the hill. I was running a pretty good place and had people blowing by me in the first 600 meters until we got to the hill. After doing the climbing the race went downhill on a steep downhill that really pounded the ankles and knees. I hate steep downhills more than anything so that put a major negative about the race in my mind. However, I ran my fastest mile ever in a race. :)

After getting through the first two miles the majority of the rest of the course ran on a trail next to a stream. It was actually really pretty and peaceful. I really loved this part of the course. Then the course ended back on the road.

Following the race they had chicken rice soup and philly soft pretzels. The chicken rice soup had a weird taste and I could not eat it. I was not the only one either.

I would probably think of running this race again if it was not for the downhill section. However, I know how that section beats my body up and probably will skip next year. However, it is not a bad race and I think a lot of people would like it.

Race Management

I actually did not run this race but my 10 and 11 year old both ran it. I feel bad about not giving this race a good review because the run is for a very good cause. However, the management of the race was very poor this year. My son ran it last year and it was a pretty nice smaller run so I am not sure what happened this year.

We probably should have known that it would be not as good when we could not find any real information about the event on the website.

Again, since it was a small community race, the boys still wanted to do it.

The biggest problem with the race is that there was no lead 'person' to direct the runners or have people on the course directing runner's where to go. The two lead runners were often confused on which direction to go. The other problem was that the course was also short of the 5K distance. I am not sure exactly what happened with that but the course was probably in the 2.8/2.9 range. There was just a lot of confusion on what was going on and no one seemed to have any real answers. My boys still had fun and liked it but I think that had more to do with how with how well they did.

The group that this race benefits make a difference in the lives of individuals with developmental needs. This meant there was also a lot of walkers on the course and people with developmental needs which was really nice.

As I said, the race has a great cause and can be a really nice 5K but they do need to fix a few of the management issues of the event. I am sure my boys will come back again next year. though.

Race Management

The Disney Wine and Dine was my reward race for getting fit & healthy and something I was really looking forward too. It was a 'destination' race that cost a fair amount of money and time. I really have a ton of mixed feelings about this race and some general impression of Run Disney races now.

My wife and I got to the expo on Mid-Day on Friday afternoon. The management and efficiency of getting your bib and shirt is flawless and as good as I have seen. The downside is that much of the 'prime' merchandise quickly sold out on Friday morning in the first couple of hours. The only merchandise I really wanted was a wine glass and they were sold out. Being a first time Disney runner, I found out that if there is something that you really want, you better get to the expo early. That is a tip for anyone doing their first Disney race. The other downside is that the race merchandise is not cheap at all. There was some stuff I liked but was not interested in spending the money on it. I thought many of the vendors were clearly more focused on women than men. This is understandable when 2/3 of the race registrants were women. I don't have a problem with this but it just meant that there was not many vendors that appealed to me.

Pre-Race:
Transportation to the race from the Disney properties was pretty flawless. I got to the race a couple hours early and waited in line for a picture with Mickey. It was well worth the wait. They had a stage with big video board that kept the crowd entertained. The lines for the characters was not bad. They also had plenty of ports-potties. The wait was long but manageable.

The Weather:
What was a very nice but warm and humid night, quickly turned ominous with dark clouds quickly rolled in with major lightening in the area. This caused an entire evacuation of the area. I have to give the race committee and volunteers tons of credit in their efficiency in moving 13,000 runners to a safe place. This put the race in peril with no one really knowing what was going on. Twitter became the best place to get any information. Much of the information there being reported was correct and being said before official race communication. After waiting for quite a while, we were told that the race was being delayed until 10:45PM but more importantly was being reduced to just about 7 miles. Hence, why I am calling it the Wine and Dine 11K. This included removing the entire animal kingdom section which was a big part of why I had registered for the race. I will admit, I was completely disappointed and pretty upset about it. I understood the situation but still was pretty disappointed. I think the race director did as good of job as they could with the hand that was dealt to them. This was a lot of time, money and training put into running this half so it was hard not to be disappointed.

Race:
I think Disney did a great job of putting runners into proper corrals. You have to submit a proof of time to get assigned a corral. I was fortunate to be in corral B which meant I was starting in the first 1000 runners. Unfortunately, like any race you had people jumping fences and being in corrals they did not belong. This causes problems with runners the father back you were placed.

With the new modified course, the first several miles were out on the highway with some entertainments and a few characters. No one I was really interested in getting a photo with.

The aid stations were very well stocked and well manned. The volunteers out on the course were simply outstanding. I could not say enough good things about them. I think they did a good job of trying to raise some people's spirits who were disappointed about the course change.

Prior to entering Hollywood Studios there was a nice little incline that Sarge from Toy Soldier was barking at you that was pretty cool. The running through Hollywood Studios was pretty awesome and especially the Osborn Lights. That was clearly the highlight of the run. After exiting Hollywood Studios, you ran along the Boardwalk back to Epcot. The run through Epcot was very quick but great crowds.

I ended up being closer to the front and so I had no issues with crowding or congestion but I heard some horror stories from people who were much farther back on crowding and poor runner etiquette. I think a lot of this had more to do that you got into a crowded section way earlier than you would have with the full distance. The crowd did not have a chance to thin out.

The race finishes up in the parking lot of Epcot. You are quickly ushered through this section very efficiently and receive your medal and some water and Power Ade along with a cool towel. The running temperatures that night was about 80 degrees with 98% humidity so it was pretty brutal. My biggest complaint with the race was that there was no cold water or drinks. I could not drink the PowerAde or water. I was already somewhat frustrated and disappointed so that kind of put me in a worst mood. They have a nice area for those that want to do a finisher shot. Since I will admit, I was not in a good mood I skipped this and just went to bag check. The race had a nice area for you to change and then you could get a drink coupon for wine, beer or soft drink. Since I need something cold i went with the Chardonnay. A first for me in that I was hydrating with Wine.

The race medals were very nice. While I did not run a half, it is still a nice memento from the race. I like the medals more for a memento than anything else anyways.

Post-Race:
As part of the race, you had a 15 voucher at the Food and Wine Festival. This was a lot of fun. Since I got done early in the first wave, it was pretty empty to get stuff. However, after about 90 minutes it became very crowded and the lines very long for drinks and food. All in all, that was pretty cool. However, I did have to buy and $85 finisher line party ticket for my wife which did nothing but get her into Epcot at 8pm.

There was some attractions open including Soarin and Test Track which i took advantage of at 330AM.

Conclusion:
I learned that the Run Disney events is really a lot more about 'fun' and 'gimmicks' than being a serious run. I don't mean that in a negative way because it takes a lot to do a 1/2 marathon. However, this seemed to have many more walkers (pure numbers and percentages) than any other race i have done. There is nothing wrong with this but if you are looking for something more serious, probably not the best run for you. I ended up finishing 237 out of almost 13000 and I am anything but an elite runner. This was more a definition of what the race is like. I think people have to realize that going into the race it is going to be a ton of walkers and people who want to do the photos with characters and etc. They are clearly there for the fun aspect and taking in the Disney experience. I would never go and just do a 'Disney' run again without a group or just for the run but I would do one again if I was on a vacation and/or it was a family event.

I think the race committee did as good of a job as they could with what was handed them with the weather but it still made it a disappointment for me who wanted to run a half. The after party was a second thought to be but for many that what was most important.

For some people, I think they will love these races but for me, it really is not something I would look to do again. I don't think my feelings about the race is as much as there is something wrong with the race as it is a personal preference for me and what I am looking for in races.
