We had such a fun girls’ trip! We are going back in 2020. The race was delayed a couple of hours due to a freak storm, but the organizers kept us updated. It was still raining at race start, but it cleared up soon after to be a beautiful day. Packet pickup and after party were in the same cool marina/restaurant area, and I rated parking two stars because there isn’t much room- we Ubered everywhere the whole weekend. Much more convenient than trying to find a spot and then paying to park anyway. I loved the unique race shirts designed by a local artist.

The race is set on beautiful Jekyll Island and runs by the beach and on paved trails under the trees. (Hello, shade!) The Neon Fun Run and pasta dinner the night before the race were a fun way to kick off the weekend. The after party wasn’t huge, as the races themselves weren’t huge (which I liked), but they raffled off prizes and had entertainment for kids as well. Oh- FREE race photos for both the Neon Fun Run and the races, and they’re my favorite race photos I’ve ever had!

They say this is one of the flattest and fastest half marathon courses in the country, and I believe it, as I ran it in under 2 hours after only training for a couple of months. Love the half-zip pullover instead of a T-shirt. I can’t say much for the scenery- urban and some nice Jacksonville neighborhoods- but nothing super memorable.

The Alaska Salmon Runs are truly the most unique. Because Cordova, Alaska is a remote town that can only be accessed by plane or ferry, the races are fairly small but considered by runners from around the world to be worth the trip. There is no expo, but the races take place during the Copper River Salmon Jam music & arts festival, so there is plenty of fun to be had all weekend.. The course is flat and fast. As there is only one road leading out of town (and it just kind of ends... Cordova’s claim to fame is “No Road”), they bus you out to the start of each race that morning, and you run back to town. There is nothing but beautiful scenery in the 13 ish miles between town and the tiny airport (near the half start), and then more beautiful scenery beyond that. I ran the 5k, the half, and the 10k in the 3 years we were stationed there, and the half was by far my favorite. I have parking/access five stars because the town is so small that everyone walks to the buses/finish area from their home or lodging.

I didn't train quite well enough for the half, but I survived, and I thought it was an excellent first race experience. The after party was really cool with awesome Louisiana food.
