This was my first time running the Sol Lipton Run Fest in the Half Marathon option. It’s been on my bucket list because it’s a local run in Pottsville, PA with proceeds staying locally. The race was unorganized, there was no official starting line, we all simply lined up behind a motorcycle. Chip timing started .25 miles into the race. There’s no official website for the run with information, just a small Facebook group. The race cost $43 online and the t-shirt swag was a short sleeved cotton tee.
The course included challenging hills, however, it was not well marked, some intersections were unmanned, with only a handful of runners it was difficult to determine the course route. There were plenty of water stations and restrooms were available on the course during a loop. I was afraid to drink water for first half until I saw a restroom on a loop, I did not want to break away from the pack and get lost along the course.
Traffic was not stopped along the course, I was honked at and cars drove by close and fast. There is a 3 hour time limit, however, water stations and roads were opened fairly early with runners still on the course.
The finish line was across a busy intersection without any traffic control.
Overall It was a cheap race. I would probably do it again simply because it’s close to home and the course is challenging, but it’s more of a “training run” atmosphere than a race. Do not expect a PR on this course.
