The SF Marathon was my first major race EVER and, man, did I get spoiled! The course is gorgeous- when will you ever be able to run on the roadbed of the GG Bridge?? The hills are tough but it's totally worth it. Course support from both race organizers and citizens of SF is great, as well. It gets a little boring around mile 22 but it quickly gets more scenic as you approach the finish. I recommend this race to anyone- rookie or veteran runner! It rocks!
