Stephanie Boyd's thoughts:

The Owensboro 10-miler is billed as the oldest race in the state of Kentucky. My husband is from Owensboro, so we decided to make a weekend trip home to visit family and run the race. The race is local and small, there were around 200 people registered for the race. Packet pick-up was at a local running store and was very easy and quick. The swag bag included a running shirt as well as a water bottle and coupons to local stores, including a discounted massage.

The race was at 7 am CDT, which was ideal as the temp as at 79 degrees when we started. The course is an out and back scenic loop, with a finish at the scenic Smothers Park on the Ohio River. Police support was large (one lanes of major highways were shut down for runners), but overall crowd support is low, which is expected for a race this size. The course is flat and fast, so that made this race bearable in the heat.. There were water stops around every 2-3 miles along the course. The finish line included music, a cheering crowd, lots of snacks, water, gatorade and chocolate milk. There was also a massage tent for runners post-race! The medals are large for a 10 mile race. There were also lots of awards for overall and age group winners. I was able to take home a 2nd place award for my age group. Overall, it is a nice local race for those wanting a 10 miler under their belt. My only wish was that communication was better; you had to keep checking Facebook for updates on the race; there were no email updates about start time, parking, etc. This could make it difficult for those coming from out of town who were not familiar with the packet pick-up location, race start line, etc.
