Melissa 's thoughts:

There are not enough adjectives in the dictionary to explain this race. Incredible. Epic. Amazing. Beautiful. And those don't scratch the surface.

If you're looking for a race full of swag, this is not your race. If you're looking for a race that showcases the running community at its finest, LOOK NO FURTHER. I have run dozens of races, but this race is by far the best one I've ever done.

I grew up in Millinocket and lived there in its hay day. When the streets were full of people, the shops on Main Street were bustling, the mill was roaring, and the fire department horn let you know it was time to head home for the night. Millinocket has changed, but its people have not. This race was started by Gary Allen to help bring life back to Millinocket. It has done more than that. It has brought people to town, it has given citizens a renewed purpose, it has showcased the meaning of community.

The race starts uphill and continues uphill for the first 6 miles. Along the way you can guarantee to see people line the sides of the road cheering you on or riding alongside you honking their horns all the while getting a view of Mt. Katahdin that is unlike any other. You get some reprieve before heading back towards town on the lake road where you are once again greeted by honking horns and cheers as you go. Once you get into town, you get one more good climb, a great downhill to cruise down, and then you hit Main Street where you are greeted with cheers unlike any other before hitting the best finish line ever - two loaded log trucks!

There is not a single thing about this race that isn't perfect - including the price! FREE! The stipulation is that you spend money in town. Hit a local restaurant and talk to the townspeople. Shop at local stores - many of which are filled with products made by the people of Millinocket. Close out your night in the local bars, you are guaranteed to have a good time!

If you have EVER had an inclination to run in freezing cold Maine in December - here is your chance! I promise - you will NOT regret it!
