The 2017 event was held on Saturday, July 2 at 7 am. It was sunny and cool, but very humid.
The race was a kickoff to the Stars & Stripes celebration for the town. It is a fundraiser put on by kids from the high school.
I actually ran this 5k 2 years ago, I wasn't even sure the 2017 event was going to happen as I was having trouble finding registration information online. I finally came upon the Stars and Stripes calendar of events and found the race information.
Registration/Pre-race/packet pick up/ Expo: No expo. I am not sure if there were pre-registration forms available. You could register on race day for $15. This price also reflects no t-shirt, no chip timing, no extra crap.
Plenty of parking available on the nearby streets for free. Real toilets near the start.
No National Anthem, just a few announcements after the person in charge had all 44 registrants entered into their phone, then a "Ready Set Go."
Race/Course: Run on paved streets, sidewalks and asphalt, along side the Mississippi River.
-Aid Stations: one water stops, plastic cups
-Course Markings - start/ finish had a chalk line, There were yard signs about binge drinking and underage drinking along the course
-on city roads that were not closed to traffic, no cones, but not a lot of traffic
-Volunteers, there were a few, and the fire department had major intersections under control.
-no photographers
-Elevation: flat course, a few inclines, nothing steep
-Scenery: part of the course is run on the top levy along the water, and you run through the Lock & Dam
-Terrain: pavement or asphalt, no major potholes
Finish/post race: The finish line had a volunteer recording finishing times. With a small walk to the pavilion along the river, you could grab a bottle of water and granola bar. When everyone was done, top 3 overall male and female finishers were announced.
My race: I was trying to race this, it's a super flat course, and I was probably the 6th female overall. The humidity caught up with me. I had a time of 26:53, but then I looked again at my watch and I only had a distance of 3 miles... so a tad short. However what are you going to do for a no frills race that only costs $15.
Overall: If I am in the area, I would run this again, it's a simple event and a fundraiser, and it's cool to run along the water.
