Beth Nixon's thoughts:

I trained for CIM with the Fleet Feet training program which included VIP treatment at the start line in 2019. Race morning our group gathered at one of the specified hotels to await the start line bus. I didn't stay in Sacramento the night before but drove in early morning with no problems. Upon arrival at the start line of the point to point course, we headed to the heated VIP tent which I thought was quite crowded and used the portapotties allocated for our tent. It wasn't cold in 2019 so we would've been fine standing outside and there were plenty of portapotties for those without the VIP access. Bag drop was a little chaotic and I'd recommend heading there sooner rather than later. Waves are self appointed, stand by your pace sign until they release all the runners. With over 10,000 runners the excitement can really be felt! Also, there is quite an elite field at CIM, this year accounting for many Olympic trial qualifiers! The course is described as fast with a net downhill but be aware that there are plenty of rolling hills. Race day weather is usually cold mornings followed by 50-60 degrees mid-morning. It is rainy season in early December, so it could be quite wet. In 2019, it rained lightly for the first 6 miles, then got warm. There's no shortage of well-stocked aid stations along the route. And no shortage of cheering spectators either! Plus, being just a few weeks before Christmas, a lot of spectators dress in festive attire-a real sight! There are people cheering basically on the entire course, with the grand finale in the final mile. Finish line festivities are great. Plenty of photo opps (don't forget to take a picture in front of the state capital Christmas tree!), snacks, hot soup, and music. The medal is always fabulous. I ran the challenge, doing the 5k the day before, and had no problem finding the tent to pick up my challenge medal. Walked back to my car which was a few blocks away at the hotel parking garage.
Race management is very professional and respond to email questions right away. The expo is a great place for photos, last minute running supplies, and a variety of CIM related merchandise.
I'd definitely recommend this marathon to any level runner.
