First things first...this race is hilly. Charlotte is deceptively hilly in general but some races, this included, can get you if you're only training flat. You do get to see some great parts of Charlotte during your travels.

Since I am a run-walker, I will bring up a few items for us back of the packers.

1) HILLS (did I mention that before?) if you're just getting into running, these hills can make a huge difference in your race time.

2) Time limit. Probably one of the biggest challenges for newbies to the half. There is a 3 hr time limit and they mean it. Aid stations go down after a certain time and the finish line will not be waiting if you can't make the pace.

3) The medal. This could be the biggest draw for this race if you were doing the Run for Your Life Six Pack (maybe one of the only reasons I competed in this half)

Overall not a bad Charlotte race. There are definitely easier/more forgiving half marathons to do. It's a challenge but worth it if you're up for it!

If you want a fun Halloween race, this could be what you're looking for!

Upsides:
- The terrain is pretty easy and 5 miles a decent distance for most newer runners.
- The medal neat and if you sign up early enough you get your name on your bib!
- The costumes are definitely the best part!
- The after race booths had plenty of goodies!

Downside? You will probably have to pay for parking if you don't get out very early.

The distance is short and a fairly easy route. Themed races are usually pretty fun though most runners just went for green attire and didn't go all out like some holiday races. The weather's still fairly mild in March so even newer runners would like this race.

The scenery wasn't much to talk about but if you're doing the RFYL Six Pack, this is a great first race of the season!
